Transport Deputy Minister to address eThekwini maritime summit

Durban, KwaZulu-Natal- The Deputy Minister of Transport, Ms.Sindisiwe Chikunga, will deliver keynote address at the Durban 1st annual maritime summit on Thursday, 25 February 2016.

The summit is hosted by the eThekwini Maritime Cluster in partnership with the eThekwini Municipality. It will take a look at various sectors of the maritime industry that are vital to Durban being a smart port city.

Durban is the home to South Africa’s largest and busiest port generating more than 60% of the combined revenue of South Africa’s eight ports handling 80 million tons of cargo annually.

In addition the summit along with the maritime trade and careers exhibition will:

  • Showcase the Port of Durban to the public
  • Create public awareness of the port and its related sectors
  • Showcase maritime business and provide a platform for business networking
  • Look at maritime manufacturing and transportation opportunities in terms of Operation Phakisa.

During her address to the summit, the Deputy Minister Chikunga will also focus on Operation Phakisa which aims to unlock the economic potential of South Africa’s ocean economy.

The summit will be attended by various stakeholders who are influential and decision makers in the maritime industry.
