15 injured in head-on collision between Pietermaritzburg and Richmond

At approximately 12h50 on Tuesday afternoon 12 September 2017, Netcare 911 responded to reports of a very serious collision on the R56 between Pietermaritzburg and Richmond.

Reports from the scene indicated that a car and a minibus taxi were involved in a head-on collision. The incident and preceding events will form part of a police investigation.

Paramedics from Netcare 911 and other services attended a total of fifteen injured people at the scene.

Both drivers, as well as a front passenger in the minibus taxi, were trapped inside the vehicles and fire fighters were called upon to use the “Jaws of Life” to free them from the wrecks.

Eight people sustained serious injuries, some of whom had multiple fractures. They were attended to by Advanced Life Support paramedics and analgesic medication was administered to manage their pain. Five of the injured had sustained moderate injuries while two were fortunate to escape with relatively minor injuries.

The Traffic Police were also at the scene.
