Volvo S90 to contend for 2018 South African Car of the Year title

September 19, 2017 • Road

Johannesburg – the Volvo S90 has been announced as a finalist in the fight for the 2018 WesBank South African Car of the Year (COTY) title. Building on the strong foundation laid by the new-generation Volvo XC90, which was launched in South Africa in 2015 and went on to claim the local COTY crown in 2016, the S90 introduced the latest and greatest of Swedish luxury, safety, design and technology to the large sedan segment in South Africa, early in 2017.

A high level of standard equipment in all derivatives, which includes the likes of full-LED smart headlights, semi-autonomous driving technology, automatic climate control, digital instrumentation and a tablet-like touch screen interface which includes satellite navigation, is just one of the S90’s many compelling attributes.

Value for money is an inherent factor as well, with all S90 derivatives asserting keen price advantages over their rivals, in addition to superior standard specification levels.

The minimalistic approach taken by Volvo’s designers on the interior is another boon with the S90 – an inherent sense of calm, serenity and quietness envelopes the driver and passengers who are naturally met by Volvo’s legendary seat comfort and a high-quality tactile experience with real materials throughout.

Safety is of course also a major highlight, the S90 having been named as one of the three safest vehicles ever tested by Euro NCAP – the other two being the Volvo V90 and Volvo XC90. Besides the now-expected raft of safety acronyms and airbags, the S90 also features the likes of City Safety autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian, cyclist and large animal detection, Run-off Road Mitigation and Protection, Lane Keeping Aid with Lane Departure Warning, Driver Alert Control, Autobrake at Intersections and real-time Road Sign Information.

The 12-derivative range features a selection of two petrol and two diesel drivetrains, with Volvo’s latest and exceptionally efficient Drive-E engines mated to 8-speed Geartronic automatic gearboxes and either front- or all-wheel drive. Three trim grade – Momentum, Inscription and R-Design, which are available with any of the four available engines – allow consumers to enjoy different sides of the S90 depending on their budget and driving lifestyle, focusing on Swedish luxury and sportiness in varying degrees.

Finalists in the 2018 edition of the prestigious automotive competition will undergo a rigorous real-world testing programme early in 2018, with the announcement of the winner expected in March 2018.
