In a bold and strategic operation, the Sekhukhune District Vala Umgodi Task Team has delivered a decisive blow to illegal mining activities in the Sekhukhune District. The operation, conducted on 13 July 2025, at Thaba Balotsaneng, resulted in the arrest of two suspects and underscores our unwavering commitment to safeguarding our country’s natural resources.
At approximately 18:00, the police intercepted a suspicious white tipper truck suspected of transporting illegally mined minerals. A swift and coordinated response led to the arrest of a driver and his crew. Both suspects were charged with illegal possession of minerals.
Further investigations revealed that both individuals are illegal immigrants, exposing the complex and insidious networks fuelling illegal mining operations. This operation demonstrates our resolve to clamp down on those who threaten our nation’s prosperity through illicit activities.
The South African Police Service remains steadfast: illegal mining will be met with zero tolerance.
