RMI welcomes new leadership at the Department of Higher Education and Training

July 28, 2025 • News

The Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI) has extended its congratulations to Mr Buti Kgwaridi Manamela on his appointment as Minister of Higher Education and Training, and to Dr Nomusa Dube-Ncube on her appointment as Deputy Minister. The appointments, announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on 21 July 2025, come at a critical time for the skills development sector in South Africa.

The RMI has a long-standing partnership with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), and remains a key stakeholder in national task teams, projects and committees focused on driving artisan and vocational training in South Africa.

Representing the retail automotive aftermarket sector responsible for approximately 2% of South Africa’s GDP, the RMI supports a network of over 23,000 registered employers and 300,000 employees, many of whom rely on a robust and responsive skills development system.

“Our collaboration with DHET has been instrumental in aligning industry needs with training initiatives,” says Louis van Huyssteen, RMI’s National Director: Training. “We remain committed to promoting skills development and creating pathways for young South Africans to enter the workforce.”

RMI CEO, Ipeleng Mabusela, echoed the sentiment saying, “Our work with DHET has enabled us to create meaningful opportunities for both employed and unemployed learners. Through initiatives like Project Dineo which was launched this year to provide 300 technical training grants to young artisans, we are driving transformation by attracting more women, youth, people of colour, and persons with disabilities into the industry. The automotive sector offers a wide range of technical and non-technical career opportunities, and we are proud to be part of building a more inclusive and skilled workforce.”

He said the RMI looked forward to continued collaboration with the newly appointed leadership and further strengthening the alignment between industry needs and training provision, ensuring that South Africa’s youth are equipped for sustainable careers.
