Police address the alarming increase in housebreakings, gender-based violence (GBV), drug abuse, and Stock Theft in Excelsior

August 13, 2025 • News

Excelsior SAPS, in partnership with the Sector Crime Forum and CPF members, continued the celebration of #WomensMonth with a community awareness campaign held on 13 August 2025, next to the Excelsior SASSA offices and Rearabetswe Centre. The event aimed to address the alarming increase in housebreakings, gender-based violence (GBV), drug abuse, and #StockTheft in the area.

CPF member, Mr. Ramatsa expressed concern about the growing number of housebreakings in Excelsior. He encouraged residents never to leave their homes unattended, to arrange for someone to be at the property when away, or to inform neighbours so they can help monitor the premises.

Sgt Ramatsa of Excelsior SAPS spoke on the scourge of GBV, explaining it as violence rooted in unequal power relations between genders. She stressed that men can also be victims and urged families to stop GBV, as it impacts not only the victims but also children, who may develop depression or turn to crime.

Sgt. Tlhobelo highlighted a sharp rise in cases of assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, largely linked to alcohol abuse. He appealed to the community to reduce excessive drinking, warning that it often leads to violence.

On stock theft, W/O Mohotloane advised residents to avoid buying livestock or meat from the streets, while Sgt. Sebitloane emphasised the need for responsible sourcing to curb the crime.

Following the awareness session, SAPS members took to Commissioner Street for a visibility operation. Approximately 30 vehicles were stopped, resulting in three fines issued for traffic law contraventions.
