Partnership empowers young people in India to identify unsafe streets and advocate for safer journeys

The Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, with support from the Autoliv Safety Foundation, has launched a new initiative in India to help children and young adults identify dangerous road conditions around schools and communities and advocate for safer journeys.

The initiative, Building Future Advocates to Ask for Evidence-based Solutions: Mobility Snapshots by Children and Young Adults, will engage 20,000 children and young adults in Bangalore, New Delhi and Pune.

Participants will learn how to use the Alliance’s Mobility Snapshots tool to assess intersections and document risks faced by pedestrians and cyclists, including unsafe speeds and lack of safe infrastructure such as pedestrian crossings and footpaths. The initiative will also assess 50 intersections in major urban hotspots in India and use the findings to advocate for priority interventions needed to keep people safe on the road.

Implemented with Alliance member NGOs across the three cities, the initiative will scale up the use of Mobility Snapshots by mobilizing children and young adults to assess their road environments through a Safe System lens and advocate for the implementation of evidence-based interventions by decision-makers. By building local ownership and strengthening evidence-based advocacy, the initiative supports safe and sustainable mobility in rapidly growing urban environments.

“Children and young adults experience unsafe journeys every day, yet their voices are often missing from decisions about mobility and street design,” stated Lotte Brondum, Executive Director of the Alliance. “Through this partnership, young people will not only document the realities of their journeys but also advocate for evidence-based interventions that can make roads safe for everyone. We are grateful to the Autoliv Safety Foundation for supporting this important work.”

“Empowering children and young adults to become credible advocates for safer mobility is a powerful way to drive lasting road safety impact,” says Gabriella Etemad, Chairperson of the Autoliv Safety Foundation Board. “Through this collaboration, we equip young people with evidence-based tools and resources that enable local action today, while helping to build scalable, long-term improvements in road safety.”
