Taxi Hijacking: Avoca – KZN

A taxi hijacking was reported at approximately 19:40 in the Avoca, north of Durban – KZN today (Thursday).

The driver and passengers were robbed before being released at various locations during the ordeal. Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call for assistance after some of the victims were dropped off on Vincent Dickenson Road in Canelands – KZN.

Reaction Officers were dispatched to the scene where they interviewed the victim and gathered information regarding the incident. According to the 31 year old taxi driver, he was transporting five (5) passengers from Avoca – KZN towards Durban – KZN when three (3) male suspects approached and requested a lift claiming they were travelling in the same direction. Shortly after entering the vehicle, the suspects produced handguns and took control of the Toyota Quantum with registration BB51LN-ZN.

The suspects held the occupants hostage while redirecting the taxi towards Canelands – KZN. Four (4) of the passengers were forced out of the vehicle on the N2 while one (1) passenger was dropped off on the R102 opposite Cornubia – KZN. The victims were robbed of their cellphones and handbags before being abandoned.

The driver was then forced to continue travelling with the suspects to Verulam – KZN where they instructed him to refuel the taxi with R200 at a service station. Thereafter, the hijackers proceeded along the R102 where the driver was eventually dropped off at the Canelands – KZN traffic lights. He was robbed of his cellphone and cash amounting to R500 before the suspects fled with the stolen vehicle.

Reaction Officers conducted a patrol along the R102 in an attempt to locate the remaining victim but the search yielded negative results.

No injuries were reported.
