Armed robbery suspect chased down by the community and private security
An alleged armed robbery suspect was detained on Saturday afternoon following a swift response by members of the Newlands West community together with KZN VIP Security.
It is alleged that the male robbed and stabbed a victim along Inanda Road before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of stolen property. A second robbery is also believed to have occurred in the area shortly thereafter.
Community members who reportedly witnessed the incidents immediately alerted security teams and pursued the alleged suspect. The pursuit resulted in the male being detained by community members until the arrival of the South African Police Service (SAPS). During the incident, the male sustained injuries. The exact circumstances under which those injuries were sustained form part of the ongoing SAPS investigation.
Members of Newlands East SAPS requested KZN VIP Emergency Medical personnel to assess and treat the injured male before investigators could proceed with the matter. The patient was stabilised on scene before being transported under police escort to a nearby medical facility for further medical assessment and treatment.
At this stage, it cannot be confirmed if the alleged suspect will be charged as the Newlands Saps Officers requested the victim who was stabbed to open a criminal case before they can proceed with placing the alleged suspect under arrest.
Following the incident, family members of the alleged suspect arrived on scene and disputed that a cellphone and a knife, reportedly bearing suspected blood staining, recovered in the male’s possession were linked to the alleged offences. The evidential value of these items will be determined as part of the ongoing SAPS investigation.
KZN VIP Security appeals to any victims or witnesses who may have been affected by these incidents to urgently report the matter to Newlands East SAPS. Their statements and any additional evidence will be vital in ensuring that the investigation is conducted thoroughly and that all due legal processes are followed.
The circumstances surrounding both alleged robberies remain under investigation by SAPS.
