MEC Mchunu announces R314m tar road upgrade in Nkwezela, Bulwer

The long awaited dream for a tar road today came to life when MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, announced a R314 million investment in the upgrade of main road P419, from eNkwezela to eHlanganani in Bulwer, Ingwe Municipality, to 3 000 community members.

The construction of the road, which connects Bulwer to R617 from Pietermaritzburg (N3) and R612 to Donnybrook and Ixopo and R56 to Richmond.
Mchunu said the upgrade was part of the government’s rural development programme and will create 200 direct jobs and hundreds more indirect jobs, while connecting the communities around Bulwer to other towns and main corridors. It will be completed in 2022.

“The upgrade of P419 to tar will assist the community of Nkwezela and surrounding communities with much needed access to KwaGwala and Pholela clinic, and seven schools around the area. Beyond these amenities, it will connect the town to other nearby towns and main logistics corridors across and beyond the Harry Gwala District Municipality, which currently has R889 million worth of projects underway.

The construction of the 23-kilomtetre long road will create 200 direct jobs and many more indirect jobs, boosting the local economy including in terms of skills development and transfer,” said Mchunu.

Mchunu added that it was critical that all road users and community members took great care of the road and strictly respected road traffic rules to prevent accidents, crashes and fatalities.
