The National BMX Championship and African Continental BMX Championship, which took place at Giba Gorge Park in KZN, on Saturday and Sunday, the 1st and 2nd October 2016, was a weekend filled with BMX action.

Young Jeep Team BMX racer, Alex Dolman (15), participated in both Championships in the Boys under 16 race. In the South African National BMX Championship, Dolman finished 2nd, losing only to the strong Jason O’Shea. The following day, racing in the African Continental BMX Championship, Dolman was having none of it, winning the Under 16’s race, this time ahead of Jason O’Shea.

Cycling South Africa President, William Newman, said: “When I arrived and saw all of the young girls and boys lining up to do their moto’s, I thought, ‘wow, cycling is in a very good space.’ We have a lot of talent. It shows here because we have a lot of young girls and boys participating in the sport, and BMX is the best way to teach them about, and get them involved in cycling. The finals were also so exciting.”

The African Continental BMX Championships had a great turnout of riders from Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa.

Newman added “Our challenge now is to ensure that we have BMX in all nine provinces, and active. We would also like to see more African nations taking part in the Continental Championships, but to have these four nations is a great stepping stone.”
