AVI Awards open for aviation innovation

Johannesburg, South Africa: Thursday, 02 August 2018 – Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) SOC Ltd, is calling on all innovators to submit entries for the fourth Avi Innovation Awards. The closing date is Friday 21 September 2018.

The Awards recognise individuals and institutions who contribute to aviation innovation through intelligent ideas and designs, especially those of products and processes aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the aviation industry.

The Awards categories are:

  1. Student innovator:                         Strictly for 18 years and above, and still studying
  2. Emerging innovator:                      Independent innovator not working for any research institution or university
  3. Professional innovator:                 Working within an institution or involved in a research environment
  4. Organisations:                               Any organisation including research and educational institutions
  5. Media:                                            Journalists with an interest in aviation

The first four categories (above) need to show clear description of product/process; problem product/process aims to address and extent of problem; differences between proposed product and other available products/solutions; how these differences enhance efficiency and/or effectiveness of product and/or process; envisaged commercial and social impact of product and/or process and stage of development of product and/ or process.

Media entries will be judged on concept, coverage and writing.

ATNS CEO, Thabani Mthiyane says the 4th Industrialisation Revolution played a huge role in ATNS deciding to “continue providing a platform and an opportunity” for local innovators and emerging Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) to showcase their exceptional innovative and creative skills, expertise and brilliance. “We are looking for sharp minds that are innovative beyond the norm. We want to attract, recognise and award great solutions and processes that alleviate the challenges faced by modern aviation industry, while also considering improvements on existing technologies, services and products.”

The cash prizes for the 2018 competition are:

1st prize:           R30 000

2nd prize:         R20 000

3rd prize:          R15 000
