The Kwazulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Bheki Ntuli has today (06 October 2019) learnt with great sadness of the deaths of five people who have just perished in the N3 Pietermaritzburg bound.

Preliminary reports have revealed that a Toyota bakkie failed to negotiate a bend and lost control and veered off the freeway. Four people died on the scene and other multiple injuries were also found on the scene. Another person died later in hospital. Other details pertaining to the positive identification of the deceased have not yet been found. The department will send a team tomorrow that will consult with the families of the bereaved to assist them in this time of need.

MEC Ntuli said although five people have died this will by no means deter him in forging ahead with his plan to fight the war on road accidents.

“It is unfortunate that we have learnt of the death of five people on our road having just unveiled our plans to curb road accidents during our annual October Transport Month. This makes us even more determined to fight and win against road fatalities. We have intensified our programs so that no more lives are lost on our roads from now until the festive season and beyond. We have also deployed officers to patrol our highways and increase visibility as we head for the busy festive period. I would like to send my deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and wish those in hospital a speedy recovery,” said Ntuli.
