SAPS urges everyone to put safety first and remain extremely cautious during flooding
While some parts of our country are experiencing clear skies and calm weather, other communities are facing the harsh reality of flooding, destruction and displacement.
To all residents and visitors in and around flood affected areas, the SAPS urges everyone to put safety first and remain extremely cautious.
Important Safety Tips:
1. Do not attempt to cross flooded rivers, bridges, or roads, even shallow water can be deadly.
2. Never walk, drive, or let children play near moving water.
3. Keep children within eyesight at all times, especially when going to and from school.
4. Parents are urged to reconsider travel routes and school transport arrangements in affected areas.
5. Motorists must avoid flooded routes and obey road closures and warnings.
6. If in doubt, turn around, do not take chances with floodwater.
7. Pedestrians should avoid walking through water; you cannot see open drains, debris, or washed away ground.
8. Stay away from riverbanks, bridges, and low-lying areas.
9. Do not attempt to retrieve belongings from flooded homes until authorities say it is safe.
10. Be alert for damaged roads, unstable structures, and fallen power lines.
11. Keep emergency numbers saved on your phone and ensure your phone is charged, for rainy days.
12. Check on elderly neighbours, children, and persons with disabilities.
13. Follow official communication from authorities and disaster management teams.
14. Do not spread unverified information or rumours that may cause panic.
15. Report emergencies or stranded persons immediately to SAPS or local disaster management.
⚠️ Floodwater is powerful, unpredictable and life threatening. Do not underestimate it.
SAPS, together with partner agencies, remain on the ground and in the air, working tirelessly to protect lives and assist affected communities.
