The SAPS in Nelson Mandela Bay District in the Eastern Cape continues to intensify efforts to curb the circulation of illegal firearms. High-density Operation Shanela II was conducted on Wednesday 10 September 2025, by members of SAPS Kwazakele resulting in the confiscation of five firearms and several rounds of ammunition. Four suspects were arrested.

On Wednesday 10 September 2025, at approximately 21:30, while SAPS Kwazakele was busy with operations, members operationalised information about suspects in a silver Suzuki Celerio with firearms. The members swiftly acted on the information and proceeded towards Veeplaas in Kwazakele where the vehicle, fitting the description circulated, was spotted in Mbane Street, Zwide. A high-speed chase ensued through Zwide until the vehicle stopped in Quza Street where the three suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled. The members apprehended the driver and found two revolvers in his possession and a blank firearm.

The members continued chasing the three remaining suspects who fled into a flat let. Members tactically entered and arrested all three suspects. Further investigation has led to the recovery of three firearms with its serial numbers filed off.

The four suspects, aged between 52 and 55, were detained on charges of illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm, illegal possession of prohibited firearms and unlawful possession of ammunition.

The suspects will appear in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on Friday 12 September 2025. The suspects will be profiled through further investigation to establish any possible linkages to other reported cases.
