Several animals recovered during stock theft operations in the Eastern Cape

OR Tambo #SAPS recovered 59 sheep, 12 goats and 05 Cattle, all suspected to be stolen in different parts of the district and arrested one 23-year-old male suspect in Mncwasa locality under Kwaaiman policing precinct on Thursday, 09 April 2026, at about 15:00.

In the first incident in Mqanduli, Kwaaiman police acted on information received and arrested a 23-year-old male suspect while he was herding eleven suspected stolen sheep. Two of his accomplices managed to evade arrest. The sheep, which had been stolen from a kraal the previous night, were positively identified by their rightful owner.

In an unrelated incident in Phingilili and Bhokisini localities under Bityi policing precinct, the Station Commander, Lieutenant Mbunyuza and the Detective Commander, Captain Mlilo who received information about suspected stolen stock kept in two abandoned homesteads, led the members to the two localities and recovered 48 sheep and 12 goats, some kept inside the houses. The operation was conducted from Wednesday, 08 April 2026 at 21:00 until Thursday, 09 April 2026, at about 04:00.

Some of the recovered livestock has already been positively identified by recent stocktheft victims whilst the unclaimed ones have been taken to Tsolo Municipality Stockpound.

In the last incident in Nxotwe locality, Qumbu, five (05) cattle unknown to the community were recovered by the OR Tambo District #StockTheft Prevention Task Team on Wednesday, 08 April 2026, at about 06:30 and were taken to Qumbu Municipality Stockpound. Stock Theft victims are urged to timeously visit the municipality stockpounds to identify their stolen livestock.

The arrested suspect is due to appear before Mqanduli Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 10 April 2026, on charges of unlawful possession of suspected stolen stock.
OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana applauded all members involved in the recoveries for their dedication and hardwork in fighting stocktheft as it is one of the serious crimes which bring a lot of misery in victims’ families.
