August 6, 2013 • Accidents, Rail, Train

Woodstock train station, WC

Paramedics were called out to the Woodstock Train Station this afternoon around 4pm where a man had been severely injured after being struck by a train. According to witness reports, the 25 year old man was standing on the platform when he was struck.
Although still under investigation, it is believed that he was leaning out and looking out down the tracks when the train approached from the opposite direction. The train struck him and he was left with extensive head injuries.
Paramedics arrived on scene along with the team from the Fire Department and due to the severity of the patients injuries they started resuscitation efforts. The Advanced Life Support paramedic immediately took over treatment and after a long battle they managed to regain signs of life in the man.
They rushed the patient by ambulance to Groote Schuur hospital where emergency treatment was continued. Sadly, while trauma staff continued efforts to stabilize his condition, he once again deteriorated to a point where their resuscitation efforts made no difference and the man succumbed to his injuries, being pronounced dead in hospital a while later.
Authorities are continuing their investigations into what took place at the Train Station this afternoon which lead to the life of the young man being lost.
