NC Transport MEC takes Public Transport to Assess State of Industry

Northern Cape MEC responsible for Transport, Safety and Liaison Ms Pauline Williams is fairly impressed with the state of public transport but says there is still room for improvement especially with aspects of good road safety practice.

The MEC led the “Take Public Transport to Work Day” initiative of the Department with the aim of promoting public transport, analyzing the state of the industry and facilities at our ranks.  She used public transport with other commuters as a way to get first-hand experience and information through engagements with commuters and operators.

The campaign forms part of the Department’s effort in promoting various modes of transport during October Transport Month.  Public Transport is one of the more affordable options when it comes to travelling and can remedy traffic congestion.

The MEC during the campaign was joined by the Provincial Chairperson of Santaco Mr Zwane Nkonki, SAPS Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Peter Shivuri, HOD Mr Moeketsi Dichaba, senior managers of the Department and other stakeholders who all used taxis from various points of Kimberley.

“The experience was fairly good but there is still more that can be done to improve the industry and experience of the commuter and operators.  Most taxis we utilized today were in good clean condition but passengers were not wearing seatbelts, some taxis used drums or unattached chairs for extra sitting space which is not legal or safe while some commuters indicated that communication skills can be improved for some drivers and driver assistance,” alluded the MEC.

She said she also observed that some areas lacked sufficient transport while others had adequate provision.  She said through further consultations and engagements in developing and improving public transport in the Province, provision of transport on routes will have to be looked into and to ensure routes are not too saturated and are profitable for operators.

Williams indicated that the picture was not too gloomy as some operators showed understanding and had a vision for their business, some were going the extra mile for their clients and were delivering friendly and efficient services.
