The Police continue to exert pressure on criminal elements through the multidisciplinary #OperationShanela II, resulting in the arrest of 1,709 suspects across the Free State province. The operation, aimed at curbing trio crimes and aggravated robberies, highlights a significant crackdown on violent crime, drug peddling, and environmental illegalities.
The operations focused heavily on violent crimes and those that threaten the physical integrity of residents led to149 arrests for assault with intent to cause Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH), 113 for common assault, 44 for possession of dangerous weapons, 22 for robbery, 16 for attempted murder and 4 for murder.
For sexual offences the team, working with investigators, arrested 31 suspects for rape while 5 were arrested under the Sexual Offenses Act. These include the primary enablers such as 41 for drug dealing, 58 for possession of drugs and 18 for selling liquor without a valid license.
Accidents have proven to be a silent mass killer in our communities. 38 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence (DUI).
