Five suspects detained for hijacking

GQEBERHA – Quick activation and operationalisation of the intelligence information led to the arrests of five suspects, and the recovery of a hijacked vehicle with suspected stolen goods and a firearm with ammunition on Sunday 12 October 2025 in Kwazakele precinct.

It is alleged that on Sunday 12 October 2025, a white Toyota Avanza was hijacked at Samora Street, Soweto on Sea. Shortly after the hijacking was reported SAPS Kwazakele received information of the whereabouts of the vehicle. They continued to Johnson Road, where they recovered the vehicle and arrested five suspects. The members further confiscated cell phones that were also stolen during the hijacking incident.

Police also seized an unlicenced firearm and ammunition, from one of the five suspects.

Four suspects aged between 19 and 21 were detained at a police station and one juvenile (16) were detained and released into the care of his parents he will appear at Nerina House magistrate court on Friday 17 October 2025. All the suspects were detained on charges of hijacking, possession of hijacked vehicle and suspected and one suspect were also charged for the possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The four suspects will appear in the New Brighton magistrate court on Tuesday 14 October 2025.
