Robbery suspects arrested by the Mthatha K9 Unit

February 10, 2026 • News

A swift response by the Mthatha K9 Unit to an armed robbery near Madeira Street at about 08:30 on Monday morning led to the arrest of five male suspects aged between 22 and 41 in the North Crest residential area.

It is alleged that a 47-year-old businessman was driving near Madeira Street when his vehicle was suddenly blocked by an unknown vehicle. Two armed male suspects exited the vehicle and robbed the victim of a bag containing a large amount of cash and cellphones. The suspects fled the scene.

The Mthatha K9 Unit was immediately activated, and cellphone tracking led police to a homestead in the North Crest residential area, where the Toyota Hilux used during the robbery was spotted.

Upon seeing the police, all five suspects attempted to evade arrest by hiding in the roof ceiling of the house. They were cornered by police and arrested.

Police recovered the bag containing cash, a tracked cellphone, and bank cards. Two 9mm pistols were also recovered, one licensed and the other with a filed-off serial number, both with ammunition. Further investigation revealed that the Toyota Hilux used during the robbery was linked to a Lingelihle CAS number from July 2024 for a carjacking case.

The five suspects are expected to appear before the Mthatha Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 10 February 2026, facing charges including armed robbery, unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property, and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
