Continued crackdown on the sale and distribution of counterfeit, contraband and non-compliant goods across Gauteng

The Gauteng Provincial Counterfeit Unit, in collaboration with the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) and brand protection experts, has continued its crackdown on the sale and distribution of counterfeit, contraband and non-compliant goods across the province.

Between 13 and 15 July 2026, multidisciplinary teams conducted targeted compliance operations in Protea, Langlaagte and Randburg within the Johannesburg District. The operations focused on identifying businesses trading in counterfeit goods and ensuring compliance with legislation governing the sale and distribution of consumer products.

During the first operation on Monday, 13 July 2026, officers inspected six shops in Protea. A total of 633 items, valued at approximately R157 270.00, were confiscated.

The seized goods included 36 counterfeit pairs of shoes valued at R15 300.00, 117 counterfeit cellphone accessories valued at R111 500.00, 397 counterfeit consumables valued at R28 310.00, and 83 illicit poison products valued at R2 160.00.

On Tuesday, 14 July 2026, the operation moved to Langlaagte, where police worked alongside NRCS inspectors to inspect a warehouse. During the inspection, 35 781 non-compliant electrical goods, with an estimated value of R4 709 345.00, were confiscated.

The final operation was conducted on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, in Randburg, where two shops were inspected. Authorities confiscated 1 446 items valued at R187 890.00.

The confiscated goods included 529 counterfeit consumables valued at R22 190.00, 13 counterfeit toys valued at R2 800.00, and 904 non-compliant electrical products valued at R162 900.00.

In total, the three-day enforcement operation resulted in the confiscation of 37 860 counterfeit, contraband and non-compliant items, with an estimated combined value of R5 054 505.00.
