Police in the Eastern Cape issue a strong warning to the public against the dangers of heavy drinking during New Year’s festivities.

December 31, 2025 • Accidents, Advice

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, and all SAPS management issue a strong warning to the public against the dangers of heavy drinking during New Year’s festivities.

We emphasise the direct link between alcohol abuse and increased criminal activity. This includes road fatalities, violent assaults, domestic incidents, and public disorder. A significant number of crimes responded to during this period are alcohol-related.

To ensure public safety, SAPS will maintain a heightened, visible presence with roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, and foot patrols across the province, especially on major routes like the N2, R61, N6 and R72. There will be zero tolerance for drunk driving, drinking in public, and any form of violence.

We make a special appeal to parents and guardians: you are responsible for your children’s safety. Actively monitor their activities and ensure no underage drinking occurs. The community is urged to celebrate in moderation and to report drunk drivers or criminal activity to Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Let us welcome 2026 safely and responsibly.
